Oatmeal Porridge

Oatmeal porridge has long been known to soothe the digestive system and reduce constipation.  You can make a soothing bath for dry or eczematous skin by suspending a small bag of oatmeal under the hot tap when the bath is being filled.  Oats also contain substances that protect against certain cancers.

 

The soluble fiber found in oats slows the digestion of starchy foods and gives the body better control of the level of sugar in the blood.  People who need to inject insulin can sometimes reduce the dose by eating more soluble fiber.  Steadier blood-sugar levels often reduce hunger and improve weight control.

 

Recently, it has been shown that oat bran supplements help to lower the level of cholesterol in the blood.  They should be introduced gradually to the diet to give the digestive system time to adjust.  However, you are advised to avoid if you are sensitive to gluten.
