Carbohydrates - one of a large
group of chemical compounds, many of which are important sources of
energy as foodstuffs. There are three major groups of
carbohydrates in food: sugars (sucrose, fructose, glucose, etc.);
starches; and cellulose, which occurs in fresh and dried vegetables,
cereals, and fruit. Sugar and starches are easily digested and
are an important energy source. Cellulose is not converted by
digestive juices but provides dietary fiber. |
